By now, those who do not know that we are hard at work building a philosophe–out of bits and pieces, fragments and flotsam–might as well stop reading.

Energy always takes more than it’s worth–it is a losing proposition.

Religion and ideology don’t get along because one is always trying to teach what the ball in motion means, while the other is busy trying to catch it.

Wellness yearns to become the new puritanism–the wellness of the body, the wellness of the mind, the wellness of the spirit.

Wellness is presently defined as the accumulation of things.

The worldly person does not hold out for more when what is needed is better.

Americans could be better people if they weren’t so set on being the perfect people.

Despite what my friends feel, there is nothing wrong with America that a little time and maturity won’t fix.  Only a rogue gives up on a young person.

Too many parents spend half of their lives resenting their children and the other half loving their grandchildren.  This is heartbreaking.

Be better to your children than they are to you.

The quality being recommended in the preceding statement used to be known as ‘forbearance.’  The word is almost never used today, and when it is, it is almost always misused, in the sense that the person who is the cause of the disturbance is thought to have done something seriously wrong, but that it must be overlooked out of a wise and patient quality on ‘our’ part.  In fact, what is endured when one ‘forbears’ is only a minor and temporary infraction–a more serious mistake would require another concept, and a more severe response.  The tendency to oversignify and politicize everything has corrupted the far more generous original meaning.

Adults  have ceased to be adults.  In a consumer culture, it is considered naive to be too concerned with maturity in taste, simple to want more knowledge, and fashionable to be stupidly greedy.   

**

**

Satire is not what it appears to be.  But it must also be what it appears to be in order to work.

**

**

A common misdefining of terminology must result either from some unique virus in language, or from a distinct error on the part of individuals.  The misdefining of aesthetics along the lines of manufactured uniqueness and false distinctiveness is, therefore, both a difficult virus to be rid of, and an error that is nearly irreversible in its conviction.

**

**

We must guard against helping in the incipient development of counter-counter-truisms.  This may be an impossible task, but to fail to take it up only quickens the general decline of the Western world.

**

**

Some cannot speak without expressing bigotry.  Others seldom speak.
