The Underground Lady [Page Twenty-Four]

One should address what one is addressing and not everything else.  The latter method is the modus operandi in criticism in the West—and the basic method of containment of the most radical implications in any artistic work.

It is easiest and most effective to cover up an aspect of a thing by not drawing attention to it, while at the same time speaking of the whole–and then, if one is confronted with the existence of the ignored part, insisting that it is not even there.  This collusion in studied ignorance is really what the Western bourgeoisie mean by “community.”

How can one take America seriously anymore?  Half the population lives in abject poverty, reinforced by racism and classism.  And yet it is a rich nation supposedly.  America has become a bad joke.

Each successful idea should be judged according to what its success has cost humanity.  Nationalism required nothing less for its success than that the earth should be divided against itself forever.

**

**

To rid humanity of bigotry we must first show the whole world that nations do not strictly exist, nor have they ever existed.

If a friend calls you from around the world, what does it mean to either of you that you are in different nations?  The situation makes one instantly aware of what a ridiculous conception of reality such an idea as the “nation” must rest upon.  Technology will end the nation-state.

The Zone will replace the nation as the new basic unit of group self-reference.  One can see this emerging already in the concept of economic development zones, those areas of the world designated by the rich for the location of the most extreme forms of exploitation.  The more powerful groups always end up adopting a new identity first, by foisting its counterpart, inscribed with power, onto the weaker and poorer.

**

One can see the pattern described above in the history of the Modern British Empire and its former colonial properties.  At first only the outlying parts of the Commonwealth were considered separate nations—England was the homeland.  Later, the whole became a nation-state, a bastardized form meant still to gesture to the former supremacy of the imperiosus satus.

Eventually the world’s nation-states will break themselves apart into Zones—Europe, always progressive, has already begun—and ethnic identity, which has been kept alive as a useful relic for the nation, will be submerged once and for all.  Of course, I have no hope of success in the process, which would only result in a new, more terrifying level of power anyway.  It will probably be cut off by the advent of a more virulent racism.  Perhaps we will come to judge each other as “un-human” according to the few genes we don’t share in common.  What a delightfully absurd way for us to destroy ourselves.

One thing is certain: We are doomed.
