The Underground Lady [Page Twenty-Six]

Attractiveness can never be counteracted by intelligence.  When they exist in the same person, which do you remember first?

I am a dropout.  What have I dropped out of?  What haven’t I?

Humanism is a bland, amorphous philosophy.  No matter how one puts it, Humanity is a monstrously weak generalization.  Thus its long history of abuse by tyrants.

**

**

Mao thought he was a humanist.  Pol Pot probably thought he was, too.  We are buried under corpses made by the humanists of the past hundred years.  When will we finally butcher enough human beings to make us sufficiently humanistic?

The only really worthwhile endeavor left to us is the strictly objective investigation into the movement of particles.  The physicists are the only reliable philosophers today—and all they have to offer is a universe that will exist forever in darkness and coldness.

Someday at least we may be able to travel to other regions of the universe.  Outer space exploration must take precedence over the investigation into the ever smaller spirals of our “inner” psychological and spiritual space.

Psychologists are like little children running around in the dark breaking things, and then blaming it on the darkness.

Philosophy represents a taper lit against the dark—one and only one small light against the enormity of the abyss.

The worst prima donnas of humanism are the rationalists.  The supposition that a philosophy conceived in the eighteenth century would still have something to tell us, as if it had been invented yesterday, cannot be taken seriously.

The analytic methodology is neither old enough to have developed the patina of age that sometimes indicates an idea or fragment may hold something interesting or useful, nor new enough to sweep away any part of the reigning order.  In fact, the analytic worldview is the worldview of the state.

Science follows the laws of capitalism: a profusion of theories (products), rather than the positing of a select few; the constant extension of itself through propaganda (advertising and “journals”), rather than through careful consideration of the consequences; and a futuristic outlook that sells itself based on false hope, rather than a worldly outlook with all the darkness and pessimism that implies.  And the false hope at the center of this shell game?  That a system rooted in all these faulty principles can survive, and not simply devour itself.

It is best to see humanism as a weird off-shoot of the Enlightenment, a backwater of egotism and hubris.  We are not really at the center of anything, and limiting ourselves to such a method, far from yielding any useful insight, leads to increasingly absurd levels of self-obsession.

Our proper course, again, must be one of outer space exploration.
